" "Ive got cancer"
It's something you never want to hear as a spouse, child, or friend. However it's something that is being heard more and more often these days, specifically with breast cancer. 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life time. That is a scary number; however being diagnosed with breast cancer isn't the death sentence it was even a decade ago.
Our family has become advocates for early detection because in 2005 the rock of our family, MaryJoe, was diagnosed with breast cancer. As she went through surgery and radiation, our world turned to pink ribbons and a lot of prayers.
In 2008 our world was turned upside down again when, in yearly mammogram/MRI appointment, we heard those dreaded words for a 2nd time. She had cancer in the other breast. She had a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, readiation, and reconstructive surgery. Again, this goes to show that early detection saves lives!!
That's when we started doing Race for the Cure and Strides Against Breast Cancer b/c it was early detection that caught her breast cancer and we want to advocate that. We come from a large family and are blessed with a lot of friends, so we decided to make a team and named it 'Harley's For Hooters" since some of us are motorcycle riders as well. For our last event, there was well over 20 of us participating.
Please turn to the women in your life and ask them to get screened...take them to the appointment, hold their hand as they speak with the Dr, be a support to them. Get involved, raise money to pay for treatment for those who can't afford it. Put your sneakers on and join us for these races/walkes or hop on your motorcycle and join us for a ride.
Let's make a difference! Let's find a cure so no one else has to hear those words again!
